4 Tips For Successfully Working From Home

Working remotely...the dream, right? Right!! I mean, does it get any better than working from the comfort of your own home (or from anywhere your heart desires)? No! But, that doesn't mean that working from home doesn't have its challenges.

First of all, when faced with the task of keeping yourself accountable and on track, it can be challenging. Especially when you have all of the distractions of home at your finger tips. Netflix, novels, and chores can tug at your attention, and if you aren't mindful, you can end up not getting anything productive done.

I am lucky enough to work from home. It is just as amazing as you'd imagine it to be. But I've definitely had to develop some practices in order to stay on track and get my work done in an efficient and timely manner.

Here are some tips that I've picked up for successfully working from home:

  1. Set a schedule. When working from home, it is important - no, CRITICAL - to set a schedule for yourself and to stick to it every day. Set your alarm and get your morning routine going. Drink some coffee, read the news, eat a good breakfast, and then start your work day at a set time. Similarly, schedule breaks for yourself throughout your day, and schedule a non-negotiable time when you STOP WORKING for the day. This is much easier said than done...trust me. I am pretty much always working, whether that's writing at the computer, taking photos, or checking in on work from my phone. BUT, do as I say and not as I do. Know when to call it quits for the day so that you can have a nice relaxing evening and unwind. 
  2. Get dressed up. This is SO important, in my opinion. Just because you work from home, doesn't mean that you shouldn't get ready and put your best foot forward. For me, that means getting dressed and doing my hair and makeup EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. It makes me feel put together, and like I am ready to get down to business. As a work-from-home-mom, it would be soo easy to stay in PJs all day and not do my hair and makeup all week. But you know what? I'd feel like crap about myself! Caring about what you look like is important, to a certain degree. Getting dressed and done up for your day can do wonders for your mind set!
  3. Take breaks. When you set your schedule, be sure to schedule in several breaks for yourself. Maybe a few 10 minute breaks, and then one longer break for lunch. During your breaks, get in some exercise, check your Instagram, read a novel, watch a show...anything that is NOT work related. Take time to decompress for a few minutes and just have fun. Then, dive right back in and focus on your work. Breaking up your work into chunks makes it a lot more manageable and will minimize that feeling of getting "burned out". Studies show that taking frequent breaks from work throughout the day leads to being much more productive. So do yourself a favor and step away for a bit.
  4. Get out of the house. Every single day, try to get out of your house for a bit. Whether it's to go get some work done in a coffee shop or at a park, or going for a long walk outside on one of your breaks...getting out of the house is good for your head. Make an effort to get out into the world, interact with people, or simply breathe in some fresh air.
